prev | next NOME, AK Nome is Alaska's oldest continuous first-class city, incorporated April 9, 1901. It's located on the south coast of the Seward Peninsula facing Norton Sound, part of the Bering Sea. The city is the commercial hub of northwestern Alaska, as well as the site for the finish of the 1,049-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from Anchorage each March. While in Nome, be sure to visit the Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum, which showcases Nome’s unique history. The city-owned museum is filled with exciting and educational displays and exhibits on events and people that will convince you why there is "No Place Like Nome." The city of Nome celebrated its centennial from 1998-2001, and Nome’s only museum explains and illustrates the fascinating history of the Nome Gold Rush from the discovery of gold by the Three Lucky Swedes in 1898, to the arrival of Wyatt Earp in 1899 to the gold rush of 40,000 People to Nome in 1900. One event you won't want to miss is the Idiotrod Dog Sled Race, which commemorates the 1925 diphtheria epidemic when much needed serum was raced from Nenana to Nome by dog team. Twenty teams relayed the medicine 674 miles in 127.5 hours! Known as "The Last Great Race on Earth", mushers and dogs travel 1,049 miles from Anchorage to Nome each March.
